Assisted reproductive techniques have been widely developed and have given hope to couples who have struggled with infertility problems. Infertility treatment options have developed means of decreased multiple pregnancies in assisted reproduction, which can become a high risk factor for mother and baby.
We can define multiple pregnancy in assisted reproduction as when two or more fetuses develop simultaneously in the uterus of the mother. This can occur from the multiple insemination of eggs through in vitro fertility treatments. Such fertilization is based on the manipulation of the gametes of one or both parents to obtain a pregnancy, and can lead to multiple pregnancies in assisted reproduction therapies.
Undoubtedly, the likelihood of multiple pregnancy is managed by infertility treatment approaches, and is particularly related to the number of embryos transferred in each treatment, the quality of these transfers, as well as the woman's age. Initially, several embryos are implanted in the uterus of the mother, with the goal of any of them becoming a successful pregnancy. However, multiple eggs can develop and multiple pregnancies have been known to develop two, three, and up-to eight embryos.
Multiple pregnancies can lead to various risks for the mother, such as gestational diabetes, preclampsia, anemia, among others, and affect the baby's gestational development. For this reason Reprotec Fertility Center and the Hospital Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota have developed techniques that are at the forefront of the latest medical breakthroughs, not only in Colombia, but worldwide, to reduce the possibility of multiple pregnancies in assisted reproduction.
The results obtained in our infertility clinic demonstrate our expertise in this type of treatment and a greatly reduced possibility for multiple pregnancies. In the last year the rate of multiple pregnancies in our hospital was only 18% with an average of only 2.7 embryos transferred. For more information about these statistics follow this link.
