Ethical and legal implications of assisted reproduction |
|
The legal and ethical implications of assisted reproduction techniques can be considered by a number of perspectives: philosophical, religious, and biological principals that have debated and reflected on the ethical and legal aspects of assisted reproduction & IVF abroad.
Until recently, infertile couples were forced to accept their condition or opt for adoption. The current scientific, medical and technological advances, have offered these couples hope for a successful pregnancy.
Some of the main arguments against assisted reproduction techniques are varied. But we must recognize that on the one hand, fertility doctors are doing everything we can to improve their techniques and reduce the number of multiple pregnancies and there are international laws that govern fertility centers abroad.
At a general level we find that among Colombian and foreign laws, there are some similarities in regards to assisted reproduction techniques:
- Permission to use assisted reproductive techniques to couples with proven infertility problems.
- Prohibition of genetic manipulation of embryos for purposes other than procreation.
- Cloning is prohibited.
- The application of assisted reproductive techniques require informed consent and liberty to offer various treatments.
- The children born of assisted reproduction techniques have the same rights and duties as all children.
Although assisted reproduction techniques are still debated, medical intervention makes it possible to give birth to a baby in normal circumstances that would be otherwise impossible for many couples in Colombia and the world. Beyond a religious, ethical or legal debate, assisted reproduction techniques are a legal right & option for all couples who are searching for assistance to treat their fertility problems.
