While there are many considerations to keep in mind when attempting pregnancy, a woman's age is a determining factor for achieving the long-held dream of motherhood. In fact, with increased age there is decreased likelihood of success in assisted reproduction treatments.
When a woman is born, she begins with a total amount of eggs she will use throughout her life. Therefore, once their menstrual cycles begin, the eggs are being lost every 28 days. Similarly, the quality of eggs decreases with the passing years as the woman's biological clock advances.
The case is different for men, and male infertility problems are associated to a lesser extent of age, as sperm are in continuous production, so a man's fertility can remain almost unchanged throughout his life. At the same time, sperm quality decreases over time, and this is another variable to be considered and tested for.
There are many factors that women take into account today to plan a pregnancy or the decision to postpone, such as economic status, emotional stability, partner, fertility problems, and others. Yet after 37 years of age, there is a drastically lower fertilization capacity in women due to natural changes in their reproductive system, which simultaneously decreases the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.
We must also remember that as age advances, so increases the risks to the mother - as well as for spontaneous pregnancy loss, and further increase of risk for the baby, including birth defects.
